Abstract
This study examined the mediating effect of depression in the relationship among the four major difficulties(i.e., poverty, illness, inactivity, and loneliness) and suicidal ideation among the elderly population aged 65 or over. The data used in this study was collected as part of the¡°Aging Anxiety and Psychosocial Adaptation of Elderly Population¡± project which was carried out by the School of Social Welfare in Yonsei University along with the¡®Vibrant future research center¡¯ in the Seoul Elder Welfare Center. Totally 317 cases were collected, and 303 responses were used for final analysis. Linear regression analysis, structural equation analysis, and procedures were conducted to verify the hypotheses of this study. The results of the study is as follow; First, 44% of participants responded that they had thought about committing suicide. And among the four major difficulties, inactivity had the strongest effect on suicidal ideation. Moreover, poverty, disease, inactivity, and loneliness showed indirect effects through the mediation of depression as well. Based on the results this study suggested theoretical and practical implications for early prevention of elderly suicide with major four problems and depression.
